안개와 구름 사이로
정승희는 20세기말 <허기 Hunger>(1998), <지금 이곳>(1998), <잃어버린 우주>(1999) 습작들을 거쳐 21세기 초반에 자본주의 사회의 그늘을 그린 <정글>(2001>, <빛과 동전>(2004) 이후 10년 간 모습을 감췄다. 2015년 <우주보자기>와 2018년 <안개 너머 하얀 개>, 2021년 <보이지 않는 눈>은 그림책 작가이자 삽화가로서의 면모가 묻어나는 어린이 주인공 삼부작이다. 2024년에 발표한 <기억은 먹구름>은 미래로 간다. 최신 클라우드 기술과 빈약한 경제 사정으로 정체성의 위기를 겪는 주인공은 지구인 대부분의 초상이다. 당대 청년의 현실에서 애틋한 어린 시절을 거쳐 불확실한 미래로 작가는 새로움을 쫓는다.
Through Fog and Clouds
Jung Seunghee produced her early studies, including Hunger (1998), at the end of the 20th century. In the early 2000s, she depicted the shadows of capitalist society in Jungle (2001) and Light and Coin (2004), after which she remained out of sight for a decade. Fabric Cosmos (2015), A White Dog Beyond the Fog (2018), and Invisible Eyes (2021) form a trilogy featuring child protagonists, reflecting her sensibilities as a picture-book author and illustrator. Her 2024 work Dark Cloud Memories looks toward the near future. Its protagonist—grappling with an identity crisis brought on by cutting-edge cloud technology and precarious economic conditions—mirrors the lives of most people on Earth today. From the reality of contemporary youth to the tenderness of childhood and onward to an uncertain future, the artist continues her pursuit of the new.
