살아있다는 자각
비탈길 위 낡은 아파트, 인적 없는 거리에서 여자는 떠나자 매달리는 남자를 보내고 집으로 돌아간다. <고치>(2015)는 여자의 공간을 점령한 거대한 존재이자 그 자체로 여자를 휘감은 공간이기도 하다. 여은아는 한국영화아카데미 졸업작품인 단편 <고치>를 마치고 아이돌과 매춘이라는 빛과 그림자에 사로잡힌 소녀들을 그린 <장미여관>(2018)에 들어갔다. 장편 프로젝트를 이은 것은 웹 애니메이션 시리즈, <심야상영관>(2020-2021)으로 사고와 질병, 사람과 소문에 관한 여섯 가지 도시 괴담을 풀어냈다. <유령이 떠난 자리>(2023)는 세상을 떠난 주인의 흔적을 치우는 과정을 담았다.
대학 시절 스톱모션 애니메이션에 빠져 움직임의 짜릿함을 맛본 것이 결정적 순간. 어느새 공포 애니메이션의 대명사로 각인되었고 2024년 현재 동료 작가들과 셋이서 장편 옴니버스 <없었던 일>을 작업하고 있다. 여은아가 무서운 이야기를 좋아하는 까닭은 삶이 그런 것이어서가 아닐까. 자료 조사와 취재에 충실한 작품은 실제보다 진짜 같다. 무엇보다 공포는 날카롭게 살아있음을 상기시킨다. 심장이 쪼그라들고 머리털이 쭈뼛 서는 짜릿한 감각을 선사한다.
Consciousness of Being Alive
On a steep path, amidst worn-out apartments and a deserted street, a woman departs, bidding farewell to a clinging man, and returns home. Cocoon is a massive presence that occupies the woman's space, entwining and enveloping her. After completing her short film Cocoon (2015) as her graduation project at the Korean Academy of Film Arts, Yeo Eun-a delves into Motel Rose (2018), depicting two girls captivated by the light and shadow in the worlds of idols and prostitution. Following this feature, she ventured into a web animation series, Midnight Horror Cinema (2020-2021), unraveling six urban legends involving accidents, diseases, people, and rumors. A Long Alone (2023) captures the process of clearing the traces left by the deceased.
The decisive moment came during her university days when she immersed herself in stop-motion animation, discovering the thrill of movement. In no time, she has become synonymous with horror animation, currently collaborating with two fellow artists on a feature omnibus. Yeo Eun-a's affinity for frightening stories may stem from life being inherently unsettling. Works grounded in thorough field research feel more authentic than reality itself. Above all, horror serves as a sharp reminder of the vividness of being alive.
