불꽃 장인, 김강민
어떤 이는 낯선 곳으로의 여행을 꿈꾸고, 다른 이는 떠나온 곳을 그린다. 그곳은 장소이기도 하고 시간이기도 하다. 김강민은 지나간 시간에서 이야기를 건져올린다. 오래된 목욕탕을 찾은 <38-39°C>의 주인공은 20년 전으로 돌아가 아버지의 때를 민다. <사슴꽃>은 비슷한 시기의 아들에게 보양식을 먹이러 사슴농장을 찾은 가족을 그린다. <점>은 <38-39°C>의 속편이다. 아버지의 때를 밀던 주인공은 이제 아들의 때를 민다. 김강민은 단편을 통해 이전 가족과 새로운 가족의 이야기를 한다. 부모님이 계시는 고향과 거리가 멀어진 만큼 심적으로 가장 가까운 존재를 찾게 된 것이 아닐까. 하지만 딱히 과거로 돌아가고 싶은 것 같진 않다. 거기 분명 사랑이 있지만, 상처도 있다. 김강민은 무턱대고 끌어안을 수 없는 곤란함을 말한다. 손으로 차츰차츰 만든 이미지에도 친근함과 낯섦이 공존한다. 김강민의 작품은 번쩍번쩍 스파크가 인다.
Kangmin Kim, a master of his craft
Some people dream of traveling into the unknown. Others paint portraits of the times and places where they have been. Kangmin Kim shares the stories from his past. In the animated short 38-39°C, the protagonist finds an old bathhouse and travels 20 years into the past where he scrubs his father’s back. Deer Flower takes place in a similar period as a family visits a deer farm so that the son can have a traditional medicine. Jeom is the sequel to 38-39°C in which the boy who scrubbed his father’s back has grown up and now scrubs his own son’s back. Kangmin Kim’s short animations tell the stories of families both old and new. They reach out to those who are nearest in his heart, perhaps because his parents live far away in their hometown. There we may find love but also pain and an ambivalence that prevents us from fully embracing the past. Familiarity and strangeness coexist in Kim’s methodically hand-crafted images that shine with a brilliant spark.
