시간과 존재를 통과한 자화상
2005년 출간된 『파라노이드 키드』에는 불면의 밤을 보내던 정유미의 20대가 담겨있다. 2024년 <파라노이드 키드>를 통해 작가는 20년 전 자신을 보듬어 준다. 같은 해 나온 <서클>에는 <파도>(2022)의 인물들이 그대로 등장한다. <연애놀이>(2013)의 커플도 찾을 수 있다. 이제는 자기의 모습을 인간 군상에서도 본다. 패션 브랜드 KIMHĒKIM과 협업한 <안경>(2025)은 디자이너의 개념적인 옷을 제 식으로 풀어낸다. 6월에는 <안경>과 <파라노이드 키드>를 묶어 전국 극장 개봉을 했다. 영화관에서 관객과의 대화에도 나섰다. 또 다른 시도는 장편이다. 활발한 작품 발표와 대외 활동을 하는 정유미의 모습은 낯설고도 반갑다.
While Out of Sight
Paranoid Kid, published in 2005, captures Joung Yumi’s sleepless nights and her twenties. In 2024, through the animated Paranoid Kid, the artist embraces her younger self from 20 years ago. Circle, released the same year, features characters from The Waves (2022). The couple from Love Games (2013) also makes an appearance. Now, she sees herself reflected in a variety of human figures. Glasses (2025), a collaboration with fashion brand KIMHĒKIM, reinterprets the designer’s conceptual clothing in her own way. In June, Glasses and Paranoid Kid were released together in theaters nationwide. Joung also participated in post-screening talks with audiences. Her next experiment is a feature-length film. With her active stream of new works and public engagements, this version of Joung Yumi feels both unfamiliar and welcome.

안경을 깨뜨린 유진은 새 안경을 맞추러 간 안경원에서 렌즈 속 작은 집을 발견한다. 그곳에서 세 개의 그림자 자아를 만나 화해하고 새 시야와 함께 성장한 자신을 마주한다.
Yujin breaks her glasses and visits an optician. During an eye exam, she sees a house in a field and finds herself inside. There, she meets three shadow selves, reconciles with them, and gains a new perspective. Finally, she leaves the house and gets new glasses.

소녀가 바닥에 서클을 그린다. 그곳을 지나가던 사람들이 하나, 둘, 그 서클 안으로 들어간다. 어느덧 사람들로 서클이 가득 찬다. 이들은 서클 밖으로 밀려 나가지 않으려 애를 쓴다. 소녀가 돌아와서 바닥에 그려진 서클을 지우자 사람들은 다시 자신의 길을 걸어간다.
The girl draws a circle on the ground. Passersby step into it, one by one. Soon the circle is full of people, struggling to stay within. Once the girl returns and erases the circle, people start heading their way.
파도 The Waves

이야기의 시작은 사람이 없는 빈 해변이 보인다. 파도가 해변으로 반복해서 밀려온다. 5명의 인물이 해변에 등장하고 각 인물들은 반복되는 파도의 흐름 속에서 자신들의 이야기를 보여준다. 그리고 한 명씩 해변을 떠나고 마지막엔 파도만이 계속해서 밀려든다.
The story begins with an empty beach where no one can be found. The waves repeatedly drifted into the shore. Then five individuals appear, and each of them shares their own stories along with the rhythm of the waves. And each of them leaves the beach until the waves are all that remain.

집 하나가 있다. 집은 이내 무너져 내리기 시작한다. 지붕과 벽이 허물어 지면서 집안 내부의 물건들이 하나씩 모습을 드러낸다. 이것들 역시 바닥에 떨어져 부서지고 사라져간다. 모든 것이 소멸된 순간, 혼자 남은 한 사람을 만나게 된다.
There is a house. The house starts falling apart. The roof and walls collapse, slowly revealing the belongings inside the house. These objects also fall to the ground, breaking apart and disappearing. When everything is gone, a person appears who is left all alone among the remains.
