못 보던 사이

정유미의 첫 애니메이션은 한국영화아카데미 졸업작품 <나의 작은 인형 상자>(2006)이지만, 먼저 만든 것은 <수학시험>(2011)이다. 작가로서 입지를 굳힌 것은 칸영화제 감독주간에 초청된 <먼지아이>(2009)부터다. 그림책 버전 『먼지아이』 와 『나의 작은 인형 상자』는 볼로냐국제아동도서전에서 2014년과 2015년에 각각 라가치상을 받았다. <연애놀이>(2013)는 24회 자그레브애니메이션영화제 대상 수상작이다. 2017년에는 양장본과 페이퍼백 그림책을 냈고 2018년 가을에는 서울에서 동명의 개인전도 열었다. 2014년에는 전래동화를 각색한 그림책 『호랑이와 곶감』이 중국에서 나왔고 2016년에는 소설가, 삽화가, 만화가가 동참한 작품집 『하우스 오브 픽션』에 「이사」를 실었다. 여기서 출발한 <존재의 집>은 애니메이션이 있은 다음에 그림책을 만들었던 정유미가 처음으로 순서를 바꿔 만든 작품이다. 2021년 12월 24일부터 31까지 온라인에 공개된 <파도>는 국립현대미술관의 기획 전시를 위해 제작된 애니메이션이다. 증강현실로 작품을 볼 수 있는 그림책도 함께 나왔다. 뜨문뜨문 소식을 들으며 기다린 지 8년 만이다. 조만간 <존재의 집>과 <그림자 아이>(가제)도 나올 것이다.

While Out of Sight

JOUNG Yumi’s first animation was her graduation film at the Korean Academy of Film Arts, titled My Little Doll’s House (2006), though she had made the film Math Test (2011) before then. But it was her film Dust Kid (2009), which was invited to the director’s fortnight at the Cannes Film Festival, that established her as an artist. Since then, the picture book versions of Dust Kid and My Little Doll’s House each received the Ragazzi Award from the Bologna Children’s Book Fair in 2014 and 2015 respectively. Her film Love Games (2013) received the grand prize from the 24th Animafest Zagreb. In 2017, she released both hardcover and paperback book versions of the film. And in the fall of 2018, she held a solo exhibition in Seoul under the same title. In 2014, her picture book adaptation of a fairy tale titled Tiger and the Persimmon was released in China. And in 2016, her visual story House of Existence was included in Houses of Fiction, a collection of works by novelists, illustrators, and cartoonists. This was the starting point for Joung’s House of Existence. Whereas Joung’s previous works began as an animation and were later made into picture books, House of Existence was the first time she changed the order. From December 24 to December 31 in 2021, Joung’s film The Waves was available for viewing online. This film was made for an exhibition at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art. It is accompanied by a picture book that can be viewed using augmented reality technology. After hearing only sparse news about her works for a period of eight years, her upcoming works House of Existence and Child in Shadow will soon be released.

Yujin takes a flight to a new place, but a problem on the plane causes her to layover in a hotel. She suddenly meets her own shadow child who accompanies her on a nighttime journey.

파도 The Waves

이야기의 시작은 사람이 없는 빈 해변이 보인다. 파도가 해변으로 반복해서 밀려온다. 5명의 인물이 해변에 등장하고 각 인물들은 반복되는 파도의 흐름 속에서 자신들의 이야기를 보여준다. 그리고 한 명씩 해변을 떠나고 마지막엔 파도만이 계속해서 밀려든다.

The story begins with an empty beach where no one can be found. The waves repeatedly drifted into the shore. Then five individuals appear, and each of them shares their own stories along with the rhythm of the waves. And each of them leaves the beach until the waves are all that remain.

집 하나가 있다. 집은 이내 무너져 내리기 시작한다. 지붕과 벽이 허물어 지면서 집안 내부의 물건들이 하나씩 모습을 드러낸다. 이것들 역시 바닥에 떨어져 부서지고 사라져간다. 모든 것이 소멸된 순간, 혼자 남은 한 사람을 만나게 된다.

There is a house. The house starts falling apart. The roof and walls collapse, slowly revealing the belongings inside the house. These objects also fall to the ground, breaking apart and disappearing. When everything is gone, a person appears who is left all alone among the remains.
