비가 와도 눈이 와도, 플레이 볼
샤프와 볼펜, 색연필로 손바닥만 한 노트에 그린 이규태의 그림은 각종 디지털 프레임에서 아날로그 감성을 발산한다. 온화한 빛깔과 투박한 질감으로 재현된 인물과 풍경은 어렴풋한 내 기억 같다. 일상과 일탈의 자리, 이규태는 친구들과 있다. 만화도 애니메이션도 친구들과 만든다. 친구들과 함께 하는 모든 것은 재미난 놀이다.
2008년 <돌아보다>를 만들고 대학을 졸업한 후, 날마다 같이 게임을 하던 학교 동기들과 만화창작집단 쾅을 시작했다. 1년 넘게 부대끼다 2010년 발간한 웹진 쾅 0호에 만화 [Each other]를 실었다. 2014년 발표한 단편 애니메이션 <서로가>의 기원이다. 2012년 애니메이션 <THE BIG BOY>도 만화 버전이 있다. [몸이 큰 아이]는 쾅 30호(이규태 특집)에 실렸다. 2015년에 만든 작은 단편 만화책 [here winter]는 2017년 <여기의 겨울>이 되었다. 이규태의 일러스트레이션과 만화, 애니메이션은 서로 이어져 시간을 돌아 목적지에 당도한다. 둥근 공처럼 구르고 굴러 더 먼 곳에 있는.
In rain or shine, we play ball!
Using sharpies, ball point pens, and colored pencils, LEE Kyutae creates drawings in a palm-sized notebook and brings an analog sensibility to the digital frame. He uses mellow lighting and rough textures to create people and places like ones we might see in our own foggy memories. In both everyday life and spaces of escape, he is always surrounded by friends. Whether working on comics or animations, their process is a collaborative one, and they always bring a sense of fun to their endeavors.
Since making his graduation film Look Around in 2008, he joined together with his fun-loving friends and started the creative collective QUANG. After a year of hard work, he published the comic Each Other in their 2010 webzine QUANG VOL 0. It was the inspiration for his 2014 animation of the same name. His 2012 animation The Big Boy is also based on his original comic, published in QUANG VOL 30: Lee Kyutae Special Edition. His short comic Here Winter was similarly made into an animation in 2017. LEE Kyutae’s comics and animations are closely intertwined, as one ultimately leads to the other, somewhere down the long road.
