2008년 롯데시네마(건대입구점)에서 열린 SICAF 영화제 단편경쟁 부문에〈소이연〉이 상영되었다. 멸망의 길로 들어선 지구에 경고의 목소리를 내는 심각한 이야기라고 생각했다. 민속 박물관에서 꺼내 온 듯한 인형들이 등장하는〈그 믈〉은 저승과 환생을 다뤘다.〈오목어〉는 10분이 안 되는 시간 동안 인생의 이치를 탐구한다. 10년 전엔 〈볼록이 이야기〉가 있었다. 그때도 김진만 감독은 세상과 존재에 의문을 품고 있었다. 그의 말에는 ‘원래’와 ‘결국’이 습관처럼 배어있다. ‘원래’ 그는 도사가 되고 싶었다. 세상의 질문은 곧 그의 질문이었다. ‘이 세상의 진리는 무엇인가?’, ‘진리가 있는가?’, ‘세상은 실재하는가?’, ‘정신은 실재하는가?’ 그리고 줄곧 답을 찾아 왔다. ‘결국' 그는 도사가 되었다. 거의.

A Guru Someday
In 2008, the animated film <The Substance of Earth> was screened in the SICAF Animated Film Festival's short film competition at Lotte Cinema (Konkuk Univ.). It seemed like a dire warning from the Earth against mankind's destructive path. The film <Indra's Net> told a story about death and reincarnation using antique-looking dolls that might belong in a folk museum. <Noodle Fish> explores the principles of life within the short span of 10 minutes. Ten years earlier, KIM Jin-man had made the film <Bologee Story>. Even then, the director pondered questions about the world and existence. The director often uses words like “originally” and “ultimately” when he speaks. Originally, he wanted to be a guru. He ponders the questions of the world. What is the truth about this world? Does truth exist? Is the world real? Is my mind real? And he always found his answer. Ultimately, he became something close to a guru.
