스스로 만드는 길
2021년 6월에 한국 극장에서 개봉한 <클라이밍>은 예상치 못한 임신으로 분열을 겪는 클라이밍 선수의 이야기다. 한국영화아카데미의 장편제작연구과정 작품으로 2017년 초부터 2020년 여름까지 3년 반 동안 제작한 3D 컴퓨터 애니메이션이다. 감독 김혜미는 금속 판으로 만든 평면 캐릭터를 35mm로 촬영한 <무쇠소년> 이후 드로잉 기반 2D 애니메이션으로 <사적인 바다>, <배다리뎐>, <찰칵 찰칵>까지 네 편의 단편을 만들었다. 세 편의 장편 영화 현장에서 스태프로 일하기도 했지만 3D와는 상관없었다. 게다가 아이도 키우고 있었다. 어쩔 수 없이 작업에서 멀어진 동안 글쓰기에 매달렸다. 장편도 3D도 육아도 처음이어서 시작은 불안했지만, 작은 희망을 붙잡고 한 발 한 발 나아갔다. 미끄러져서 멈출 때도 있었지만 포기하지 않았다. <클라이밍>을 완성하고 또 다음 경기에 나섰다. 하나는 혼자서, 다른 하나는 넷이서 만드는 단편인데, 이번에는 육아에 대해 말한다.
Making Her Own Path
Director KIM Hyemi’s feature film Climbing, released in Korean theaters in June 2021, tells the story of a climber who suffers a psychological breakdown due to an unexpected pregnancy. It is a 3D computer animation produced over a period of three years, from early 2017 to the summer of 2020, as part of the Animated Feature Film Production Program at the Korean Academy of Film Arts. Kim also made the short animation The Iron Boy, featuring a flat character made with metal plates shot in 35mm film, followed by the 2D shorts Private Beach, Little King, and Snap Shot Memory. In addition to these four short films, she had also contributed as a staff member in the productions of three feature films, but she had never before worked with 3D animation. Moreover, she was also raising a child. When she had to take a step back from production, she turned to writing instead. Directing her own feature, working in 3D, and raising a child were all new experiences, making for an uncertain start. But the director held onto a glimmer of hope and took one step forward at a time. At times, she stumbled and halted, but she never gave up. When she successfully completed Climbing, she embarked on her next set of challenges. One is a solo short film, and the other is a collaboration with three other creators. Both projects deal with the experience of child-rearing.
