변주곡의 흡인력
뒤늦게 발견한 애니메이션의 매력에 빠져 독학으로 기술을 연마한 김보영은 2013년 한 해에 <아프지 않아>와 <흉내>를 발표했다. 90초 영화제를 위해 만들었던 <흉내>는 다음 해에 3분 버전으로 다시 발표했고 2015년에는 <먹이>와 <헤드>를 만들었다. 2016년에는 웹툰에 도전했고 2017년에 시작한 세 가지 일상툰 [반려인간], [김꽈백 작업실], [미숙한 미숙이]은 현재까지도 계속하고 있다. 2018년에 발표한 <레버>는 <먹이>와 포식자와 피식자가 공존하는 식당이라는 배경을 공유한다. 2021년 10월 바르샤바국제영화제에서 <버킷>을 공개하고 2022년이면 또 다른 단편 애니메이션을 내놓을 예정이다. 출발이 늦은 만큼 다작을 하고 싶다고 한 그는 빠르게 하고 싶었던 작업의 목록을 실현하고 있다. 꿈과 현실이라는 이분법으로 정의할 수 없는 인간의 복잡 미묘한 내면은 점점 더 노련하게 표현된다. 숙련된 음악가가 들려주는 익숙하면서 새로운 변주곡처럼.
Absorbed with Variations
KIM Boyoung was late in discovering the joy of animation and taught herself its techniques. In 2013, she released two films, Replacement and Impersonation, within a single year. Impersonation was originally made for the 90 Second Film Festival and was later remade into a 3-minute animation in the following year. In 2015, Kim made PREY and The Heads, followed by a webtoon in 2016. Then in 2017, Kim began three comics about her everyday life, which are still ongoing. Her next short released in 2018, The Levers, shares something in common with PREY. Both films take place in a restaurant where predators and prey coexist. In October 2021, Kim's A Guitar in the Bucket premiered at the Warsaw International Film Festival. The director is planning yet another new film in 2022. Having had a late start, Kim declared her desire to make many films and is quickly going through the list of projects she wanted to make. Like a skilled musician playing a familiar yet new variation, Kim is growing more adept at portraying the complex subtleties of the inner human mind, which can't easily be categorized by the dichotomy of dreams and reality.

한 남자가 낯선 이에게서 일자리 제안을 받는다. 그가 할일은 작은 방에서 좋아하는 음악을 들으며 종이에 쓰여진 번호대로 레버를 당기는 것뿐이었다. 평소대로 레버를 당기던 남자는 헤드폰이 고장나 음악이 멈춘 사이 이상한 소리를 듣게 된다.
A man accepts a job offer from a stranger on the street. All he needs to do is listen to his favorite music in a room and pull on the levers for the numbers written on a piece of paper. He is satisfied with this simple job, until the music pauses in his headphones and he hears strange sounds behind the curtains.

앞니가 흔들거리는 걸 엄마가 알아버렸다. 이 뽑는 날이 달력에 표시되면서 아무것도 손에 잡히지 않고 하루종일 이가 뽑히게 될 생각으로 무섭기만 하다. 공포의 이 뽑기를 피하느라 피곤한 가운데 하루하루가 지나가고 아이는 자신을 잡으러 오는 이빨인간의 올가미로부터 옴짝달싹하지 못하며 끌려다니게 된다.
A boy's tooth is loose and his mother has marked the date to have the tooth pulled. The boy is terrified of the pain; it may as well be a death sentence. The fear causes immense anxiety, and he spirals down into a web of nightmares and irrational behavior to avoid his mother.
