서사의 주인되기
칼아츠 실험애니메이션 전공 석사학위작 <아이즈앤혼즈>(2021)을 독일 제작사와 협업했던 임채린은, 졸업 후 첫 작품인 <나는 말이다>(2022)를 제작하면서 한국과 덴마크의 지원을 받았다. 차기작인 <한>은 프랑스와 포르투갈 정부 지원을 받아 제작하고 있다. <나는 말이다>에는 피카소로 대변되는 <아이즈앤혼즈>의 성공한 남성 화가의 자리에 한국 근현대 화가 이중섭을 놓았다. 또 하나의 중요한 모티브는 태몽이다. 태어날 아이의 성별을 예견하는 꿈에서 작가 자신과 쌍둥이 자매는 말로 등장했다. 처음으로 내러티브를 도입한 <한>의 중심인물은 누구누구의 딸, 누구누구의 처로 불리는 조선시대 여인이다. 연달아 한국의 민속 문화와 역사에 기반한 작품을 유럽 자본의 도움을 받아 만드는 것은, 창작자로서의 정체성 증명과 지속가능한 창작을 위한 임채린의 자구책이다.
Owning the Narrative
Im Chaerin, who collaborated with a German production company on her CalArts Experimental Animation MFA thesis film Eyes and Horns (2021), received support from both Korea and Denmark for her first post-graduation work, I Am a Horse (2022). Her next project, Haan, is being produced with funding from the French and Portuguese governments. In I Am a Horse, she replaced the figure of the successful male painter—represented by Picasso in Eyes and Horns—with the modern Korean painter Lee Jung-seop. Another key motif is the taemong, or conception dream, which is believed to foretell the gender of an unborn child: in this case, the artist and her twin sister appeared as horses. Her upcoming film Haan, which for the first time adopts a narrative structure, centers on a woman of the Joseon dynasty remembered only as “someone’s daughter” or “someone’s wife.” Creating consecutive works rooted in Korean folklore and history with the support of European capital has become Im Chaerin’s way of both asserting her artistic identity and ensuring the sustainability of her practice.
