언제라도 웃는다
부처의 눈매를 닮은 아담과 이브 그리고 그들의 독생자, 코브라를 닮은 유혹자가 사는 <이상한 나라> (2002)는 다섯 살부터 재수 시절까지 다닌 교회의 일요일들과 인도에서 보낸 다섯 달이 뒤엉킨 한병아의 대학 졸업작품이자 데뷔작이다. <찔레꽃> (2004)은 두 번째 여행길, 실크로드에서 꾸었던 악몽에서 출발했다. 꿈속의 아이가 붙잡은 엄마는 전부 귀신이었다. 무서운데 키득키득거리면서 잠에서 깼다. 어느 새벽 맞춤 같은 곡을 만나 뮤직 비디오가 되었다. 동양미술과 전통음악이 어우러진 작업들은 2005 국악축전 애니메이션 프로젝트 총괄 연출로 이어졌다. 이때 만든 <오래된 미래> (2005)를 마지막으로 스타일이 바뀐다.
대학원 재학 중 영화제 초대를 받아 캐나다에 갔다가 반년을 눌러앉았다. 한국에 와서도 한동안 외출을 삼갔다. 학교로 돌아가 <모두가 외로운 별> (2006)을 만들었다. 두문불출하던 시기 드물게 만나던 친구들이 낙서 같은 캐릭터로 담겼다. 모자란 학점을 채워 2008년에 대학원을 졸업했다. 그 사이에는 결혼을 했다.
<숙녀들의 하룻밤> (2011)은 기혼 여성의 인생 중간 정산 보고서. 한병아 2.0의 시작이다. 서른여섯의 주인공이 과거의 나들과 함께 보내는 신기루 같은 하룻밤은 결혼과 육아의 경험이 여성의 그리고 작가의 정체성에 끼친 영향을 보여준다. <미쎄스 로맨스> (2017)는 할리퀸 로맨스에 도전하는 한병아 표 유부녀 로맨스다. 현실은 제도에 묶여있으나 마음에는 꺼지지 않은 불씨를 지닌 여성을 위해 구상한 작품이다. 2020년 신작 <우주의 끝>은 재정적으로 심리적으로 험난한 시기를 거치며 만들었다. 힘들어도 “나 안 죽어요. 열심히 살고 있는 거예요." 소리 내어 말하고 찰나의 로맨스도 놓치지 않는다. 아무리 괴로워도 웃음을 잃지 않는 한병아의 모든 순간은 유쾌한 애니메이션이다.
Always Laughing
Han Byung-a’s <The Strange Land> (2002) shows the home of Adam and Eve, who have eyes like the Buddha, and a cobra-like character who lures them into temptation. This was the director’s graduation project and debut film, inspired by the Sundays she had spent at church since her childhood and a five-month journey in India. Han’s second short animation, <Wild Rose> (2004), was inspired by her second trip abroad and a nightmare she experienced on the Silk Road. In this dream, a child reaches for the mother, only to be frightened by ghosts before waking from the dream. The animation became a music video when it was combined with a song that fit perfectly. The director’s blending of eastern art and traditional music continued in her directorial work for the Gugak Festival 2005 Animation Project. The resulting project, <Ancient Future> (2005), showed the last major stylistic change in the director’s work.
While attending graduate school, Han visited Canada after being invited to a film festival. She went on to remain in Canada for the next six months. When she returned to Korea, she kept to herself for some time. She returned to school and made the short film <Everybody Lonely Star> (2006). The film uses childlike scribbles to portray friends that were seldom seen during a solitary period. In the following years, Han went on to get married, and she completed her graduate degree in 2008.
<Lady’s Night> (2011) is the story of a middle-aged housewife looking back on her life. It also represents the beginning of the second phase of Han’s life and career. The 36-year-old protagonist meets younger versions of herself from different points in her life in a dreamlike gathering, showing the impact that marriage and motherhood have on one’s identity as a woman and an artist. <Mrs. Romance> (2017) tells the romantic story of a married woman in the vein of a Harlequin Romance novel. It shows that despite the realities of social conventions, the embers of a woman’s passions still burn brightly. Han’s latest film <The End of Universe> (2020) was made during a financially and emotionally challenging period of her life. The film shouts its message of perseverance—“I will survive! I’m living life to the fullest!”—without missing the opportunity for a romantic tryst. The animations of Han Byung-a show that, even in the most difficult times, there is always laughter to be shared.
