이야기를 멈출 수 없어
<도시에서 그녀가 피할 수 없는 것>은 불안이었다. 가난한 여자의 몸은 허공에서 흔들리고 있었다. 바람 끼 많은 연인 때문에 <낙타들>처럼 사막을 걷는 기분이었던 여자는 욕망에 끌려다니는 남자에게 구명줄을 던졌다. 결혼을 했고 한 살 한 살 늘어나는 나이와 함께 <피부와 마음>이 쳐지며 권태가 찾아왔다. 숨을 잃은 <유령들>이 방을 떠다닌다. 무게 없이 휘날리던 젊은 여자의 몸은 이제 침대를 묵직하게 누른다. 박지연이 소속된 스튜디오 지금이 아니면 안돼는 장편 <우리별 일호와 얼룩소>(2013), <마왕의 딸 이리샤>(2018)를 제작했다. 작은 스튜디오의 장편 프로젝트는 역량의 한계치를 가늠하게 했다. <낙타들>(2011) 이후 작품 소식이 뜸했던 연출자 박지연은 봇물을 터트리듯 <피부와 마음>(2018)과 <유령들>(2019)을 내놓았다. 짧든 길든 가볍든 무겁든 현실이든 환상이든 이야기는 머릿속에서 계속 생겨났다. 2020년엔 소설가 박지연이 태어났다.
A Mind Swimming with Stories
PARK Jeeyoun’s short animations are reflections of various stages in a woman’s life. The Things She Can’t Avoid in the City shows a woman living in poverty and dangling in the air, while struggling with anxieties that she can’t avoid. Meanwhile, the woman in Camels feels like she is crossing a desert just like a camel, all because of her lover who is constantly having an affair. She tosses a lifeline to the man who is swept up by his own desires. The woman in Skin and Mind feels both her skin and her mind growing old year after year as her marriage sinks into ennui. In the film Ghosts, a couple drift through their room, and the woman flutters weightlessly then sinks heavily into her bed. PARK Jeeyoun is part of the animation studio Now or Never which made The Satellite Girl and Milk Cow (2013) and Ireesha, The Daughter of Elf-king (2018). The members of this small studio pushed themselves to the limit to produce these two feature-length animations. After Camels, there was little news of new works by PARK until she released Skin and Mind (2018) and Ghosts (2019). Her mind is always racing with new stories and ideas, whether short or long, light-hearted or serious, real or fantastic. In 2020, PARK Jeeyoun began a new journey as a novelist.

A man and a woman, who used to date, meet after a long time. The man had left her in search of the unknown, but he’s still searching. Meanwhile, the woman’s body and soul have dried out after enduring several failed relationships. She feels as if she is crossing the desert.

Everyone has memories they’d like to forget. Sometimes those memories seem as heavy as an elephant weighing you down. But before you realize it, the memories that were too heavy to carry become light as they are replaced with new memories.
