그들의 희로애락
“손으로 만드는 건 다 좋아한다" 대학 때부터 근 20년간 손수 캐릭터를 만들고 세트를 짓고 조심스럽게 촬영하는 작업에 대한 전승배의 열정은 아직 식지 않았다. 인형들의 이야기로 재미있는 작품을 만들고 있는 토이빌은 스톱모션 애니메이션 감독 전승배와 인형 작가 강인숙의 둥지다. 두 사람이 함께 만든 단편 애니메이션만 <무슨 일이야?>(2008), <다녀오겠습니다>(2014), <두 소년의 시간>(2015), <토요일 다세대 주택>(2018), <건전지 아빠>(2021) 다섯 편이다. 2020년 <토요일 다세대 주택>을 바탕으로 첫 그림책 『쿵쿵 아파트』가 나왔는데, 오래전부터 그림책을 만들려고 애니메이션 세트들을 보관해 왔다. <건전지 아빠>도 그림책 버전이 나온다. 애니메이션과 책으로 펼쳐지는 장난감 동네 이야기는 흉흉한 범죄부터 이웃과의 갈등, 사랑하는 가족, 친구들과의 추억까지 다양하다. 마냥 선량하고 밝아 보이는 인형들도 분노와 슬픔이 있다. 그래서 더 정이 간다.
Their Joys and Sorrows
“I love all things made with my hands.” Since his university days, JEON Seungbae has created his characters and built his sets by hand. In the past 20 years, the animation director’s passion for all things handmade hasn’t lessened. Together with puppet maker KANG Insuk, they form the creative duo behind Toyville Animation Studio and create fun projects that tell the stories of their puppets. Their works include five short animations: What’s Wrong (2008), See You Later (2014), The Time of Two Boys (2015), Saturday’s Apartment (2018), and Battery Daddy (2021). In 2020, they made their first picture book Koong Koong Apartment based on their animation Saturday Apartment. A picture book adaptation of Battery Daddy is also due to be released. Both their films and books tell the stories of puppet neighborhoods which are full of all kinds of happenings. There are awful crimes, fights between neighbors, loving families, and memories made with friends. Behind the pleasant and happy-looking faces of the puppets lie deeper emotions such as anger and sadness, making it easier for us to relate to them.
건전지 아빠 Battery Daddy

Battery Daddy works hard inside kids’ toys, electronic door locks, and remote controls. One day, he takes his family on a trip to a valley. They’re having a good time when the rain suddenly starts to pour. As the river in the valley begins to flood, Battery Daddy does everything he can to ensure that his family is safely rescued.
