The angular hand-drawn lines of JEON Jinkyu’s distinctive visual style have a simplicity and urgency that is best seen in his animated short The Death Vendor (2019). His previous films, Double-goer (2013) and Material Girl (2015), are more colorful but no less sharp in their line work. After receiving his bachelor’s degree from Korea National University of Arts, JEON spent three years working as an animator before pursuing his master’s degree at Tokyo University of the Arts. While working as a freelancer, he made a series of minimalist hand-drawn animations using primarily line work, including High and Dry (2018), Brain Cleaner (2018), and The Death Vendor. Using black, red, and blue lines, The Death Vendor shows the image of death that has seeped into the life of a young child. It was followed by the director’s graduate film, The House of Loss (working title), which traces the memories of a young caretaker of elderly residents in a nursing home. JEON, who used to enjoy drawing skulls in his childhood, creates layers upon layers like the slices of an anatomical drawing. His films present chaotic experiences and a vague imagination given shape by scraping away the fat until only the skeleton remains—the work of a prolific artist who burns the midnight oil.
