다음 궤도로
미술대학 학부시절부터 다수의 단편 애니메이션을 제작하고 픽사의 장편 애니메이터로 활동했던 에릭 오는 2015년 소속사 BANA와 <O>를 시작으로 <무지개 칠하는 법>(2018), <오페라>(2020), <메타모더니티 >(2022), <오리진>(2022)을 만들었다.
2024년 4월 25일부터 2026년 3월 31일까지 <오페라>와 <오리진>에 더해 <오르빗>(2024)을 중심으로 인간 문명 역사에 대한 소회를 담은 회고전 <O>를 제주에서 개최했다. 여기서 에릭 오는 지정된 좌석에 앉아 스크린을 직선으로 바라보던 관람객의 시선을 흔들고 몸을 움직이는 경험을 연출한다.
이 전시의 끝을 출발점으로 새로운 실험을 해 나갈 계획이다. 어쩌면 작가나 영화감독이 될 수도 있고 작품과 현실의 경계가 사라지는 경이로운 쇼의 마스터가 될 수도 있다.
Expanding O
Since his undergraduate years at an art college, Erick Oh has created numerous short animations and later worked as a feature animator at Pixar. Beginning with O (2015), he went on to create How to Paint Your Rainbow (2018), Opera (2020), Metamodernity (2022), and Origin (2022), produced with his agency Beasts And Natives Alike.
From April 25, 2024, to March 31, 2026, a retrospective exhibition titled O, reflecting on the history of human civilization, was held in Jeju, centered on three works: Origin, Opera, and Orbit (2024). Here, Erick Oh disrupts the conventional viewing experience—where audiences sit in designated seats and face a screen head-on—by creating an environment that unsettles the viewer’s gaze and encourages bodily movement.
Taking the end of this exhibition as a new starting point, he plans to continue pursuing further experiments. He may become a writer or a live-action director, or perhaps the master of a wondrous show in which the boundary between artwork and reality disappears.
