딸에게 주는 레시피 (2017-2019) 한지원
인터넷이 세상을 하나로 연결하기 전, 애니메이션 시리즈는 이른 아침이나 초저녁에 방영되었다. 지금은 케이블과 IPTV(인터넷 프로토콜 텔레비전)에 애니메이션 전문 채널이 수두룩하다. 2000년대 초반 통신 기술은 단순한 캐릭터와 이야기만 허락했지만 이제 파일 용량에 제한은 없다. 대자본 블록버스터 장편도 조그만 휴대폰 화면으로 들어오는 세상이다. 이제까지 온라인 연재를 시도한 개인 작가들이 빠르고 가벼운 스타일을 전략으로 삼았다면, 한지원은 한계에서 최대치를 끌어올리는 도전을 감행한다. 우선 풍성한 이미지와 움직임으로 눈길을 끌고 에피소드마다 조금씩 다른 연출을 시도한다.
공지영 원작 『딸에게 주는 레시피』는 성인이 되어 홀로 생활하는 딸에게 보내는 엄마의 편지로 전개된다. 첫 회에 등장한 위녕은 직장 상사의 꾸지람을 듣고 언짢은 마음으로 퇴근한다. 엄마가 알려준 기분 전환법은 단순한 요리와 목욕 그리고 일기 쓰기다. 이런저런 말보다 허기를 달래고 몸을 데우고 스스로 마음을 돌아보는 게 낫다는 것이 엄마의 경험이다. 한지원이 각색한 <딸에게 주는 레시피>에서 엄마의 역할은 든든한 조언자로 끝나지 않는다. 엄마는 위녕과 거울처럼 마주 보다 어느새 이야기의 주도권을 넘겨받는다. 엄마의 과거는 딸의 현재다. 생동하는 주인공으로 두 사람의 삶을 포괄하는 한지원의 그림은 생각보다 크다.
서울엔애니메이터는 2018년 11월 22일 애니살롱에서 한지원 감독을 만나고 12월 27일 연남동 작업실에서 또 한 번 만났다. 스스로도 깜빡하지만, 이제 서른이 지났다는 한지원은 학창시절부터 작업을 거듭하며 진작부터 매력과 능숙함을 뽐냈다. 숨겨져 있던 것은 억누를 수 없는 호기심과 욕망, 끈질긴 도전 정신과 불타는 투지였다.
Before the Internet brought the world closer together in a global community, an animation series would be broadcast in the early morning or early evening. Today, there are countless cable and IPTV channels that specialize in animation. In 2000, early broadcasting technology only allowed for simple characters and stories, but now there are no technical limits on file sizes. Big budget blockbuster features can be seen on the small screen of a mobile phone. While the artists who made serial works online used speedy and light styles to their advantage, Jiwon Han tried to get the most out of the resources at her disposal. Her rich imagery and movements capture the viewer’s attention, even as she attempts something new in each episode.
Recipes for My Daughter by Gong Ji-young was published as a series of letters from a mother to her daughter who was entering adulthood and living alone. In the first episode, an employee named Wei Ning heads home in a sour mood after being scolded by a superior at work. The author’s advice to deal with a bad mood was a simple recipe, a bath, and writing in one’s diary. Speaking from her experience as a mother, she showed that filling an empty stomach, keeping the body warm, and taking care of one’s own heart were more important than hearing lengthy words of advice. In Jiwon Han’s adaptation of The Recipe Given to Daughter, the mother’s role does not end with being a source of support and advice. When the mother and Wei Ning look at each other as if through a mirror, the reins of the story change hands. Han paints a broad picture that encompasses the lives of two women. The mother’s past is the daughter’s present.
SEOUL&ANIMATOR met with Jiwon Han at Ani Salon on November 22, 2018, and again at the artist’s studio on December 27, 2018. She is now in her thirties and continues to create work with talent and charm as she had in her student years. But now we can see more clearly her undeniable curiosity, energetic passion, and enduring love of new challenges.
