춤추는 개구리 (2018) 김진만
뼈대가 보이는 반투명한 연둣빛 개구리가 정면으로 뛰어온다. 커다란 잎사귀를 타고 나뭇가지를 붙잡고 노는 모습이 스케이트보드를 타는 모양과 닮았다. 산 것과 죽은 것을 총동원한 울창한 숲과 어설프지만 의기양양한 개구리의 활기는 신선했다. 아침 햇살을 의도한 조명과 분무기로 탄생시킨 이슬도 한몫했다. 이 찬란한 현실 공간은 색이 빠지고 움직임이 멈춘 의식의 공간과 짝을 이룬다. <춤추는 개구리>는 2018년 9월 14일 인디애니페스트에서 처음으로 공개됐다. 마지막 장면, 개구리들이 육중하게 엉켜있는 덩어리에서 하나하나 떨어져 허공을 부유하는 순간 경이로움을 느꼈다. 곧이어 크레디트가 오르며 작품의 메시지와 작가의 노고가 한꺼번에 다가왔다.
김진만 감독은 15년 이상 스톱모션 기법으로 애니메이션을 만들었다. 그야말로 도를 닦았다. 진짜 명상을 즐겨 한다는 것은 나중에 알았지만 원래 애니메이터는 수도승과 비슷하다. 서울엔애니메이터는 2015년 6월 25일, 김진만 감독을 만나 <볼록이 이야기>(2003), <소이연>(2007), <그믈>(2009), <오목어>(2012)의 제작 이야기를 듣고 ‘언젠가는 도사님'이라는 수식어를 붙였다.
지난 인터뷰에서 3년이 조금 더 지난 2018년 10월 6일, 와우산 자락의 스튜디오에서 그를 다시 만나 <춤추는 개구리>의 제작기를 들었다. 영화의 실마리가 된 인터넷 짤과 춤의 달인으로서의 경험. 몸을 상하게 하고 촬영보다 더 긴 시간 손질 작업에 매달리게 했던 지긋지긋한 재료인 실리콘을 포기할 수 없었던 이유. 있는 것도 없는 것도 직접 만드는 만능 장인의 면모까지 살펴봤다.
The green frog leaps forward, its bones visible beneath the semi-transculent skin. He playfully grabs onto a tree branch and rides a big leaf like a skateboard. The frog dances in an awkward yet exuberant way while the dense forest breathes life into both the living and the dead. Meanwhile, the studio lamps create the effect of morning sunlight, and dewdrops made with a spray bottle add to the atmosphere. The brilliant world of the real goes hand-in-hand with the realm of consciousness which has no colors or movement. Dancing Frog was revealed for the first time on September 14, 2018, at Indie-AniFest. In the final scene, the mass of frogs whose limbs are intertwined begins to move as each individual frog drifts off into space, instilling a sense of wonder. Soon after, as the credits begin to roll, the film’s profound message and the director’s tremendous efforts become clear.
Jinman Kim has been making stop motion animations for over 15 years, cultivating his craft as a monk cultivates his mind. While Kim also practices meditation, his creative practice reminds us that an animator’s experience can be similar to that of an ascetic. SEOUL&ANIMATOR met with the director on June 25, 2015. After sharing his stories about the making of various films including Bologee Story, Soeyoun, Indra’s Net, and Noodle Fish, Jinman Kim was given the nickname “the aspiring guru.”
Three years later, the director was interviewed again on October 6, 2018, in his studio at the foot of Wausan Mountain. This time, he shared his stories about the making of Dancing Frog. Internet memes and the director’s own dancing experience offered clues to the film. Kim explained why he spent long hours creating handmade props with silicone materials which took a toll on his health. The interview gave a closer look at this multi-talented creator and master of his craft.
